Random Eats: January - March 2015

Item (left): Caramel Popcorn - $4.90
Item (right): Honey Comb - $5.90
Location: DanmiSoft (Suntec City Mall, Singapore)
For $4.90, I think it is a pretty good deal considering that the soft-serve here is made from organic milk. It does not taste like McDonald's, but I still prefer Milkcow in terms of milkiness. There was a reasonable amount of caramel sauce and I loved the crunch the popcorn gave, adding a great twist to the smooth soft-serve. As for the honey comb one, they gave a cube of honeycomb which oozed out honey in every bite. It could get super sweet though.

Item: Kaya Toast - $1.60
Location: Coffee & Toast (CityLink Mall, Singapore)
Kaya toast has been my most favorite Singapore-style breakfast. Coffee & Toast's version was above my expectation! It had crispy texture, generous spread of kaya and butter that melted in my mouth. Mmmmpphhh!

Item: Fried Mars Balls - $4.80 (sweet cup)
Location: Chippy Happy Food (Plaza Singapura, Singapore)
The best-selling item at Chippy has got to be the fried Mars balls. As the name suggests, it is basically just battered fried Mars bar served with a scoop of chocolate ice cream in a cup and drizzled with Hershey's chocolate syrup. Sounds like an overdose isn't it? The fried Mars balls were not too oily. The caramel was gooey but it barely oozed out. The ice cream tasted cheap too, although it went well with the warm fried Mars balls. Overall, it was a disappointment and not worth my calories.

Item: Cappuccino - $4.50
Location: November 8 Coffee & Company (Thomson V Two, Singapore)
They use Dutch Colony coffee beans for their coffee. My cappuccino came with a decent latte art. AIt was bit too acidic for me and it became more robust as it got colder.

Item: Potato Rosti - $16.50
Location: November 8 Coffee & Company (Thomson V Two, Singapore)
It is pan-seared shredded potato served with scrambled eggs, gourmet pork sausage and bacon. My friend said the rosti tasted rather weird, but for me nothing wrong with it. It was slightly oily but had nice texture and seasoning.

Item: Grilled Chicken Rice Set - $15.90
Location: Menzo Butao (Marina Square, Singapore)
The set came with miso soup, side salad and 2 pieces of squid. The chicken was too oily and the rest of the dish was just okay.

Item: Teh Tarik Ice Cream - $2.80 (single scoop)
Location: Island Creamery (Serene Centre, Singapore)
Being a home-grown brand, Island Creamery sticks to local-inspired flavors like Milo, pulut hitam, bandung and teh tarik. The teh tarik flavor that I tried was quite strong and kinda similar to Thai tea. In short, it tasted just like the actual drink haha. However, the texture was rather too icy and it was not very creamy.

Item: Frozen Yogurt - $11.50
Location: Yogurtberry (Bugis Junction, Singapore)
This frozen yogurt stall is located within the food court area. You can make your own yogurt here, and you will pay based on the weight. There are 4 yogurt machines with 8 flavors (cmiiw), such as plain, green tea, banana, chocolate, pomegranate, etc. Choices of wet and dry topping are also available. I tried to mix all flavors here and topped it with strawberry, mango, kiwi, fruity pebbles, gummy bears, nata de coco and muesli. The yogurt was not bad, it was soft and the sourness was just right. I love their green tea flavor, it was rich but not too bitter. The gummy bears were hard to chew though. Variety of toppings can be improved, and they should have mochi (my favorite topping) there haha. Overall, it is quite pricey but worth it.

Item: Bento B - $6.10
Location: Tori Q (Junction8, Singapore)
Bento B consists of 2 chickens, 1 chicken with green pepper and 1 chicken ball. I loved all their yakitoris in this bento. The chicken was marinated perfectly, very flavorful and fragrant. The meat was tender and not hard to chew. They also spread some seaweed flakes on top of the rice. Overall, it was a nice and affordable alternative for lunch or dinner.

Item: Chicken Curry Baked Rice - $7.90
Location: Collin's Grille Bento (Foodloft Hougang Green, Singapore)
It smelled so good when it came! Japanese-style curry, rice, chicken and cheese baked together turned out to be a nice combination. There were also carrot and potato slices inside. I almost could not finish it as the portion was filling, but it was so tasty that I finished it to the last spoonful. However, I feel that $7.90 is a bit too expensive for coffee shop standard, whereby with lesser amount of money, I can have a $6.40 student meal baked rice at Eighteen Chefs which comes with drink and ice cream as well.

Item: King Deal (1 Chicken + Rice + Coke) - IDR25,000
Location: Burger King (Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali)
Had this as soon as I landed in Bali early morning as I was famished. Taste-wise, KFC definitely wins but BK's chicken ain't that bad actually.

Item: Tahu Telor
Location: Depot HTS (Jl. Dr. Wahidin, Lawang)
On our way to Malang, my family dropped by Depot HTS in Lawang for dinner. I settled for a plate of tahu telor. The beancurd is fried in crispy eggs and topped with savory dark peanut sauce, making it a dish to die for. It is truly a dish that rarely goes wrong for me.

Item: Combo Twist Yogurt (medium size) - IDR42,000
Location: Sour Sally (Ciputra World, Surabaya)
My friend and I shared a medium cup of Pinklicious-original twist froyo with strawberry and nata de coco toppings. As usual, Sour Sally's froyo did not disappoint. It was smooth, a little tart with tolerable sourness. The toppings were good complements too.

Item: Green Tea Churros with Chocolate Dipping - IDR18,000
Location: Churro Cruzt (Galaxy Mall, Surabaya)
The churros was not bad, it had a pretty soft texture with fragrant cinnamon smell. The green tea filling could be thicker, because it got me upset when this too fluid filling oozed out and all became very messy. The chocolate dipping was just ordinary, nothing much to say here. For IDR18,000 for 6 pieces of churros, I considered it affordable.

Item: Pangsit Mie Bakso - IDR22,000
Location: Mie Kedondong (Jl. Kedondong Lor, Surabaya)
Those who live in Surabaya should be familiar with the name 'Mie Kedondong'. Instead of using diced or minced chicken meat, the chicken meat here is flaky that it resembles chicken floss. The noodle was springy, the beef meatballs were big and juicy. The wonton was the winner, it had soft skin and tasty filling! My only complain is probably that the broth was too salty for my liking.
