Lacuna, Surabaya

Lacuna is one of many new cafes that have opened up in Surabaya this year. Despite the central location, Lacuna is situated on the relatively quiet Jl. Sumatra, away from the buzz of the main road. Interestingly enough, the man behind Lacuna is Jacob Pepper, an Australian-born football player who formerly played for Madura United Football Team. Lacuna itself means 'missing/empty space', and Pepper hopes that the opening of Lacuna can fill the void of Surabaya's cafe scene.

I love the ambiance there! It was bustling with youngsters which were mostly Instagram foodies. The staffs were cheerful and friendly to all guests. The menu offered here is pretty decent, mostly taking on Aussie-style breakfast food, smoothie bowls and local fares like satay and nasi goreng.

Criss Cross Fries - IDR40,000
Notice that they put actual flower petals atop the fries? Pretty right, haha. On their own, the fries were pretty fragrant, crispy and tasty too.

Jakarta Bowl - IDR70,000
This bowl consists of mango, pineapple and banana topped with (more) bananas, strawberries, granola and raisins. It tasted refreshing with bursts of tropical flavors. The granola added extra crunch to the bowl, but unfortunately the raisins were too sticky. Price-wise, I think it is quite hefty and tbh not many Surabayans are willing to spend 70k on smoothie bowl. Nevertheless, I enjoyed every single bite of it and I wish more places could have smoothie bowl this good.

Lacuna is a nice addition that indeed has the potential to fill the void of Surabaya's cafe scene. This place truly reminded me of cafes in Canggu and Seminyak, especially with that smoothie bowl I had (bring back my Bali life pleaseeee?). Their food is distinctive enough to do well against the stiff competition here, furthermore it definitely scores extra points when it comes to ambiance and food presentation. I'm glad that I dwell nearby so I can frequent this place more often in the future hehe.
