Tanamera Coffee & Roastery, Surabaya

Most coffee enthusiasts in Indonesia have probably chosen Tanamera as their go-to place to indulge their passion. I have once been to Tanamera's outlet in Bali before, but that time I was rushing so I did not get to appreciate their coffee much. This time I gave it another try to their cafe in Graha Family Surabaya. In Bahasa Indonesia, 'tanah merah' means 'red land', which represents the rich soil Indonesia as the source of coffee beans. This statement cannot be further from the truth, as Indonesia is considered one of the top coffee producers in the world *hand claps*. Tanamera also collaborates closely with coffee farmers across the archipelago, while each variety of coffee has been responsibly sourced and customized to optimize its distinctive flavors, notes and aromas. The cafe decor and takeaway packaging are all designed in black and red, Tanamera's signature colors. It gives a refreshing change from the usual minimalist, woody or industrial look.

Chamomile Tea - IDR37,000
Simple, no-frill pot of hot chamomile tea to warm you up.

Hot Flat White - IDR33,000
The beans used by Tanamera range from Sumatra's Mandailing to the famed Sulawesi's Toraja. The espresso blend in my flat white was medium on acidity. It was not too milky and provided sufficient caffeine boost.

Fish & Chips - IDR55,000
The fish was nicely filleted and lightly coated with flour before being fried. Fries used was the thick-cut type, which would be perfect if it was crispier. I was expecting slightly bigger portion considering the price, but I enjoyed this dish in general.

Overall, the coffee was as good as what I had expected from Tanamera. Their coffee is more intense and acidic than what most cafes usually serve, so if you are looking for a kick in your coffee, you can get it in Tanamera. Food was mediocre at best, though I would not mind to have a try on their heavy food the next time I come by.
