Higa Asian Eatery, Surabaya

To me, choosing where to eat out in Surabaya is like browsing through Netflix. So many choices yet so little time. One of the latest additions is Higa Asian Eatery at Kupang Baru. From outside, it looks like a posh fine dining restaurant in New York (am I being hyperbolic?). To my surprise, the inside did not occupy too much space, but I was amazed by the grandiose interior. As I came one day before Valentine's Day, the place was decorated with flowers, pastel colors and... lovebirds.

Lychee Tea - IDR22,000
A rather small glass of refreshing lychee tea.

Bulgogi Baked Eggs - IDR59,000
Love how they put an Asian twist to the usual brunch-style baked eggs! It is basically baked eggs with bulgogi seasoning. I did not try this though, but don't you think that flower looks pretty? Wondered if they put it on purpose given the Valentine vibes haha.

Gyudon - IDR68,000
Major love! It's like they dumped a heap of beef slice on rice lol - so generous that you could actually scoop the beef in every spoonful. The meat had a good contrast between the brown exterior and juiciness inside. The addition of garlic chips was a nice touch to balance all that beefy taste. For maximum enjoyment, don't forget to mix the onsen egg consistently with all the other ingredients.

Kit Kat Macha Croissant - IDR35,000
The croissants were displayed at the cashier counter. The funny thing, they had already offered me croissant while I was walking past the croissant display. Seems like croissant is their forte huh? It comes in several flavors, including savory and sweet options. I tried the matcha Kit Kat one. The staff informed me that they would not reheat the croissant as it should be served cold by default. The cap was slightly crunchy, and beneath it lied a soft and fluffy interior. The matcha filling was rather absent but the matcha cream and Kit Kat chunks were delightful.

Overall, Higa is one charming place that falls under my 'worth a second visit' list. The ambiance, food and service are spot-on. Furthermore, the prices were reasonable for the quality delivered. Well done! Oh btw if you are wondering why they have 1-hour gap in between their opening hours, that gap is used for restaurant cleaning (Covid health protocols).
