Random Eats: July - September 2016

Some variants were not available that day, so we only got limited option to choose from. The roasted milk tea was a mix between bitter and sweet flavors. The bubble was sadly not chewy, it was more jelly-like. Meanwhile, the cream cheese in the Oolong Tea drink was not salty at all, it felt more like clods of cream floating inside the drink. I could not detect any salty flavor at all! Such a disappointment.

Item: Soto Ayam - IDR4,000

Location: Soto Ayam Pak No (Jl. MH Thamrin, Semarang)

Don't be surprised by the petite serving - it is the main characteristic of Semarang-style soto. The portion was quite filling to me since I added some side dishes like sate kerang (clam satay) and sate usus (chicken intestine satay). The soup did not have as strong flavor as Surabaya-style soto, but it was still savory and warming. There were some generous slices of chicken meat too.

Item: Big 8 - IDR117,273
Location: Richeese Factory (Jl. S. Parman, Semarang)

This set comes with 8 pieces fried chicken, 4 rice and 4 drinks. It is super value for money and it is enough to feed 4 people. You cannot compare the chicken to KFC's but it was still pretty decent. The superstar here is their cheese sauce. Da bomb! Dip the chicken into the sauce coz it tastes fingerlickin' good!

Item: Chocolate Bubble - IDR23,000

The chocolate flavor was rich but unfortunately the bubble was too mushy.

Item: Green Tea Soya Beancurd - IDR18,000

Location: Klaud's (Kuningan City, Jakarta)

The beancurd looked so wobbly from outside, it did not look solid at all. Pudding but not firm, soya milk but not fluid. It is best served cold and eaten slowly. The green tea flavor was rather weak but I really like the silky smooth texture of the soya beancurd.

Item: Ferrero & Cookies n Cream Gelato - IDR25,000
Location: Ohana Gelato & Cafe (Plaza Graha Famili, Surabaya)
How cute is this ice cream?! For just IDR25,000, you get this piggy-shaped gelato that comes with marshmallows. The gelato, however, was just average-tasting. The cookies n cream flavor was rather plain and did not taste Oreo enough, while the Ferrero flavor contained very mild hazelnut taste.

Item: Caramel Royal Milk Pudding

Location: Tous les Jours (Galaxy Mall, Surabaya)

TLJ's Royal Milk Pudding is similar to Paris Baguette's Royal Pudding. It tasted like PB's Royal Pudding but I think PB is more generous with the caramel syrup. The texture is super soft like tofu and melting like ice cream. Love it!

Item: Salted Egg Pork Rice - IDR30,000

Location: The Meal Idea (bazaar in Surabaya)

The pork was tender but the salted egg sauce could be more generous. Overall, it was a filling meal which lived up to its tagline, 'hungry no more'.

Item: Little Pony Blood Bag - IDR35,000

This was my main hunt from WTF Market, bought from Di.Ke.Nyot booth. It took a long time for me to find their booth and once I found it, the staff said they were running out of blood bag and I needed to wait around 45 minutes for them to re-stock it. So yeah, to kill the waiting time I walked around the bazaar (again) patiently for the sake of blood bag haha. This Little Pony one was actually taro-flavored milk. The taste was nothing special, just the packaging was very creative.

The moon is my sun and the night is my day. Blood is my life and you are my prey. Haha relax peeps, it is just red velvet milk! My blood bag looks scarier compared to the taro one, doesn't it? It looks like real blood bag haha. I don't really like the red velvet taste though.

Item: Black Lemonade Tonic - IDR20,000

Location: Vive Smoothies (bazaar in Surabaya)

Nothing to worry about its appearance. The black color in this drink comes from the active charcoal content. It tasted just like the usual lemonade with sweet honey flavor.

Item: Light Bulb - IDR35,000

It tasted meh. The only thing I liked was the cute light bulb-shaped bottle.

Item: Cotton Candy - IDR25,000

The cotton candy tasted like cheap supermarket-bought cotton candy. Not worth the price.

Item: Golden Pop - IDR30,000

At first, I thought it would be caramel popcorn but turned out it was far from the reality. It was just plain popcorn with seasoning powder (yes, you read it correctly!) used for packet snacks like Cheetos. Vanilla soft-serve plus savory powder was just meh.

Item: Chocolate Kit Kat Mousse - IDR25,000
Location: La Cocotte en Sucre (bazaar in Surabaya)

The texture was so soft with chunky chocolate Kit Kat inside. But the portion is too small!
