Stjerne Dining & Brew, Surabaya

One of the most buzzed about new cafes has to be Stjerne Dining & Brew, a modern aesthetic cafe located on Jl. Sam Ratulangi (at a corner of Jl. Kartini). Judging from the interior, one will expect this place to serve Nordic or Scandinavian food (I had even thought they would have Swedish meatballs in the menu), but in fact Stjerne features mostly Western and local varieties.

pov: museum/art gallery date :p

Stjerne's interior looks spacious with clean white walls complemented by brown wooden furnishing and a museum-like blue painting as a photo spot. It has mostly indoor seating that spans to the second floor, and the use of glass material brings natural light to illuminate this space in the day.

Matcha Cookies n Cream - IDR39,000
The matcha frappe was smooth and creamy with taste dominated by the milk and cream. In terms of matcha taste, it seemed that the ratio and proportion went out.

V60 - IDR45,000
The Japanese-style manual brew came in a tall glass. They should have brought out more of the fruity notes, otherwise it would be a well-balanced brew. Oh, and I think the additional ice cubes in the drinking glass was unnecessary — it only made the drink more watery.

Fluffy Scramble Breakfast - IDR57,000
This can be a stomach-filler for breakfast or brunch. Comprising of familiar flavors from sausage, beef bacon, scrambled egg, grilled tomato and potato wedges, this was a dish that could hardly get wrong. I did not like the French bread though (sometimes you don't need a reason to dislike a certain thing, do you?) — I would prefer if it was replaced with brioche or sourdough. The wedges look crispy from far but in fact it was moist and rather bland. Honestly, I was a tad disappointed with this dish since I was expecting something more.

Chicken Cordon Bleu - IDR73,000
The chicken breast was stuffed with cheese and smoked beef, then fried to golden brown perfection. The meat was served with potato wedges, salad and mushroom sauce. The sauce was probably the best element of the dish. Strangely enough, the wedges used here were crispier than those in the breakfast plate.

Overall, this is a place that can give a pause to your busy lifestyle to enjoy its minimalist, uncluttered space. Combined with hearty dishes on the menu, Stjerne is a great addition to the ever-growing cafes in the heart of the city. It is also likely to be the type of cafe that can satisfy multiple generations in the family, not just the younger crowd.
