Roasta Coffee + Hanaichi Teppan House, Surabaya

I was searching for good coffee in the East Coast and stumbled upon Roasta Coffee at San Antonio Shopping Street. It is an almost minimalist type of cafe with mostly white walls and furniture. Some types of coffee beans and merchandise are also available for sale at the cafe.

There are even two swings inside, how cute is that?! Of course they are not meant to be played with, only to sit on and for photo-taking purpose hehe.

Flat White - IDR20,000
My flat white was good except that it was served only slightly warmer than lukewarm. I would prefer it to be a little hotter.

Manual Brew: Sunda Aromanis - IDR25,000
Did not try this but my friend said it did not possess the berry and cotton candy hints as stated in the description.

Truffle French Fries - IDR22,000
The fries tasted good but not exceptional. It would fare much better with bolder hint of truffle oil.

Chicken Salted Egg - IDR44,000
The chicken was sufficiently crispy and the salted egg sauce was scrumptious. But at such price I wish it was served more properly, not using paper bowl.

Overall, the cafe serves good coffee in a comfortable, albeit small space. While it is not yet a particularly remarkable player in the ever growing Surabaya cafe scene, Roasta has a potential given the simple pleasure it offers. It is a good spot to swing by for a quick bite or for a casual hangout with friends if you are staying in the east.

After the coffee sesh, we walked a bit to Hanaichi Teppan House for dinner. Judging by its name, it is obvious that this place offers Japanese fare. The place is compact (typical shophouse restaurant), casual, and it is meant more for a quick meal than a place for serious discussion or leisurely talk. The menu is rather extensive and covers mostly set meals.

Katsu Teriyaki - IDR33,000
It is an additional protein that goes well with a bowl of white rice. Katsu was crispy on the outside giving a good texture and on top of that, the meat was tender and not too dry.

Mozzaru Tenderloin Set - IDR120,000
The beef cubes melted perfectly in my mouth, and they were oh so tender. Despite me recommending this dish as a definite must-try, you know what, that drool-worthy-looking cheese actually had zero stretch at all lol. I suspected it was just grated cheese sprinkled atop the beef cubes then torched.

Hanaicha Teppan House is a great option for Japanese teppanyaki at reasonable prices. I don't think I will travel all the way to eat there, but it will be a destination that comes to mind if I happen to be in the area.
