FRIDA, Surabaya

Cafe culture in Surabaya is undeniably booming with new cafes popping up at every corner of the city with FRIDA being one of the latest to hit the cafe scene in West Surabaya. FRIDA is not the easiest place to locate though, as it is tucked within Dian Istana Clubhouse and it takes around 5-10 minutes drive from Graha Famili entrance. The cafe is nicely situated next to a swimming pool, which gives a calm and quiet ambiance. Oh and here's a little TMI: FRIDA is owned by the 'crazy rich Surabayan', Melvin Tenggara.

If I had to describe how the recent weather in Surabaya had been, it's insanely hot! Thankfully, the heat was not that insane that time so we could enjoy our food in the shades without too much discomfort.

The cafe actually stands out simply due to its unique setting. While many other cafes in town try to create a relaxing atmosphere by having garden-themed design that features flowers and potted plants, FRIDA is like a cafe that integrates with greenery.

Iced Lemon Tea - IDR30,000
The lemon tea was really nice with just the right amount of sweetness and sourness. You know how some iced lemon tea are either too bland or too sour right?

Gravity - IDR45,000
The Gravity is an in-house beverage creation made of grapefruit and elderflower. It had a zesty taste followed by a lingering refreshing sweetness.

Cubanos Sandwich - IDR72,000
The Cubanos Sandwich consisted of pulled pork, bacon, cheese, mustard and pickles, hot pressed ciabatta. It was a pity that the ciabatta was a bit tough. However, this dish won in terms of taste. Every bite was bursting with flavor and it would definitely appeal to meat and cheese lovers.

Rosti Poulet Champignons - IDR80,000
With rosti on the menu, how can you say no to that? Especially considering the fact that not many cafes in Surabaya sell it. The rosti was crispy and quite thick. It reminded me to Marche's, so that kinda screamed authenticity I guess? The creamed chicken was okay and leaned toward the bland side. Well, the potato rosti itself is definitely the highlight of the dish!

To sum up my visit, FRIDA has just become my new favorite spot in the west. I approved their food standard, and while the price tag got me griping, the taste and quality made me willing to part my money with. Will certainly coming back here again even if I do not live nearby.
