Nihon Maru Ramen, Surabaya

Introducing to you my new favorite ramen in town! Nihon Maru is actually not a new name — in fact, they had just moved their establishment from a humble stall at Kayoon to a modern one in Praxis. What sets Nihon Maru apart from the usual ramen restaurants in town is that they are the first one in Surabaya to adopt Ichiran Ramen's individual dining booths concept! Perfect for the introverts (ahem, nobody will judge you for eating alone), or those who just want to concentrate on nothing but ramen.

The service was great, all staffs were polite and friendly. The cheerful J-Pop music just added to that upbeat ambiance. The Japanese head chef is occasionally involved in cooking the food, so if you sit by the open-kitchen area, that's quite a sight to see.

Ocha Dingin - IDR6,000
Not sure if it is refillable though.

Gyoza - IDR20,000
I'm sorry they do not look like gyozas as each piece was glued to one another haha. It was moderately crisp on the skin and packed with juicy meat inside, making every bite satisfying. I loved that it was not soggy and greasy. If you think the flavor needs to be enhanced, simply dip the gyoza to the shoyu and you are good to go.

Ramen Chicken Miso - IDR30,000
The noodles were springy and quite firm. The miso-based broth was light and it was not as rich as I had expected. I did like the chicken slices though; the skin was slightly charred, giving a nice smokey touch. The meat to fat ratio was also well-balanced. One thing to note, the egg does not come with runny yolk, if that is your preference.

I like that the food was decent, the prices were reasonable, and the portions were generous. It is quite rare nowadays to find places which check all these boxes. We all know how overpriced some Japanese ramen can be, but Nihon Maru's ramen is easily one of the best you can get at its given price point.
