[Closed] De Forest, Surabaya

Stepping into De Forest, you will feel happy from seeing all the greeneries that is not a normal sight to see in the bustling Surabaya city. The outdoor part will probably remind you of Sydney's Ground of Alexandria while the inside somehow resembles The Garden cafe in Jakarta. Similar concept but definitely not a copy as each of them has different characteristics.

De Forest is whimsically decorated with an eclectic mix of flowers, plants, and more flowers. The space is rather compact with narrow spacing between tables (a bit worrying in this Covid situation). Unfortunately, there was a group of 'ibu-ibu arisan' who became noisy when they started conversing. Gone was my slow weekend vibe.

Chamomile Tea - IDR30,000
A nice warm pot of chamomile tea, not sure if it's refillable though.

Iced Lemon Tea - IDR25,000
It was refreshing but a little too sugary.

Klepon Latte - IDR40,000
They labeled this drink as a special menu, so when they offered it to us we gladly accepted it. It had a good trace of brown sugar and pandan, just like drinking real klepon in liquid form lol.

The eating utensils are placed in a glass of warm water, so guests are assured that they are sterile

Classic Chicken Salad - IDR58,000
The salad was well-made, but quite ordinary. It came with veggies like lettuce, purple cabbage, cherry tomatoes and even fried wonton skin. The chicken was also succulent and well-marinated.

Classic American Breakfast - IDR60,000
Predictable breakfast dish consisting of beef sausage, beef bacon, wedges, scrambled eggs, toast and salad. It was nicely presented and the serving was quite substantial. The egg was fluffy and light while the toast had a fragrant buttery taste which I loved.

Beef Stroganoff - IDR60,000
It was thinly-sliced beef over a bowl of rice, poured with creamy sauce. The meat was juicy, good to pair with the sauce.

I was satisfied with the food at De Forest, although the other way round for the ambiance. It was a far cry from what I had imagined as dining in a lush and laid-back atmosphere. Anyway, I would also like to highlight the good service from the staffs: they catered to our needs very well and always managed to find a 'yes' answer even during a hectic situation where they could actually say no more easily.
