TGC Coffee, Surabaya

TGC Coffee is a quaint cafe on the busy Jl. Basuki Rahmat. You might overlook this place as it is not directly visible from the main road. Turn right after passing McDonald's (the turn is located between McD and KFC) and you will see a grey-colored building on the left. TGC Coffee is not a new player in Surabaya - it already has an establishment in the west and TGC Basra is its second one. It has a variety of coffee brewing equipment to produce that perfect cuppa.

The balcony area

Besides cafe, TGC Coffee also features a roastery inside. You can also buy some coffee beans displayed here. When you enter the place, the smell of coffee bean will linger around. The interior is minimalist and brightly-lit, good to lounge around with friends over a cup of joe. Mom and I went there quite early in the morning and there were some bikers gathering and enjoying their morning cuppas.

There is a courtyard in the middle of the cafe, but seemed like nobody wanted to get roasted under the sun haha

Latte - IDR36,000
The latte initially had an acidic taste but as it cooled down the tasted shifted towards my preference. It was brewed to order with pleasing aroma and flavor notes.

ChocOREO - IDR36,000
A classic cookies and cream drink that really could not go wrong.

French Fries - IDR25,000
The shoestring fries had a nice salty potato flavor and the portion was not stingy. Just that it could be fried longer to create a crispier texture.

Gyudon - IDR49,000
The seasoning was yummy, the beef was nicely charred but slightly dry. Would be good if the fried egg was replaced with onsen egg to balance off the meat. The portion was also decent for the price.

Spaghetti Aglio Olio - IDR45,000
It was a meatless aglio olio pasta with mushroom chunks and cherry tomatoes. As usual, I opted for  the mildly-spicy version. The pasta was okay and the garlic flavor came through well, although it was a little bit on the salty side.

Dark Chocolate Gelato - IDR25,000
The gelato was bittersweet with a strong cocoa finish. The cocoa taste was decadent but not overwhelming, a perfect treat to end our visit.

Overall, I enjoyed my visit to TGC. Wasn't particularly impressed with the food though, but the coffee was exciting. I will consider giving it another visit to grab a cup of coffee after a meal. Service was friendly and down-to-earth, even the owners took part in the service process. Do take note that there is no restaurant treatment here - you need to look for your own seat and make your order and payment at the counter.
