Random Eats: April - June 2015

Item (left): Matcha & Azuki with Hokkaido Vanilla Ice-Cream - $4.90
Item (right): Banana Chocolate - $4.20
Location: Tai Parfait (Plaza Singapura, Singapore)
It was kinda messy to eat the parfait as the soft ice cream melted quickly. The matcha ice cream and azuki was a nice pair - they were not too sweet. The taiyaki itself was chewy and a little on the dry side. As for the banana chocolate parfait, I think it was a tad overly sweet.

Item: Dessert in a Bottle - $2.50
Location: Emicakes (Plaza Singapura, Singapore)
It looks like Paris Baguette's Royal Pudding. The dessert consists of mango or strawberry mousse and jam, topped with milk pudding. The mousse was soft and fruity, but I think the overall dessert is a bit too expensive.

Item: Fruit Slush - $5.50 (large size)
Location: Juicy Slush (*SCAPE, Singapore)
You can mix 2 flavours of slushie and choose a fruit syrup to mix in. I forgot what I chose, but there were definitely green apple and strawberry. It made a great drink for the hot weather.

Item: Ginjiro Ramen - $13.90
Location: Ramen Kagetsu Arashi (The Cathay, Singapore)
Instead of soft-boiled egg, Kagetsu uses hard-boiled one. The broth is made from pork bones extract, creating a flavorful and savory blend. The chashu was tender and quite fatty, which went well with the ramen.

Item: Pearly Beancurd - $2.20
Location: Mr Bean (AMK Hub, Singapore)
It was my first time trying Mr Bean's beancurd with pearls. The beancurd was served warm, which seemed weird to me. It was silky smooth and the pearls were chewy. However, the syrup was too sweet for my liking. I felt like eating beancurd in a pool of sugar syrup.

Item (left): Macadamia Caramel Ice Cream - $5.80 (single scoop)
Item (right): Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream - $4.80 (single scoop)
Location: Teddy & Me (Marina Square, Singapore)
My friend and I only ordered one scoop of ice cream for each of us as we had already eaten lunch. I could not really taste nutty macadamia flavor here. All I tasted was sweet caramel. The matcha one fared better than the foremost. It was neither too sweet nor too bitter. The price, in my opinion, the ice cream was simply too expensive for its quality. I would rather have Haagen-Dazs with the same amount of money. Unless you are a Mr. Bean who comes only to take pics with the colorful British-themed decorations, you probably would not be impressed with what Teddy & Me offers. Although we had not tried the other desserts, we got no intention of giving this place second visit.

Item: Original Beancurd - $2
Location: AmaSoy (ION Orchard, Singapore)
The texture was both firm and silky. Meanwhile, the beancurd was not overly sweet too.

Item: Original Beancurd - $1
Location: Lao Ban Soya Beancurd (Jubilee Square, Singapore)
Lao Ban beancurd is super smooth and wobbly without breaking into pieces. It simply melts in your mouth and the sweetness is just right. It is my most favorite tau huey in Singapore so far.

Item (left): Blueberry Dorayaki - $1
Item (right): Cream Cheese Dorayaki - $1
Location: Dora Keiki (Ang Mo Kio MRT Station, Singapore)
The dorayaki was quite soft with thick blueberry and cream cheese fillings inside. Costs at only a buck, I think it is value for money as well.

Item: Knorr Bubur Nasi Ayam Jagung
Origin: Singapore
This instant porridge is prepared similarly to how you prepare instant noodle. The corn and chicken flavors were tasty and not overly salty. Not a bad option for a quick breakfast.

Item: Nestle Strawberry Greek Yogurt
Origin: Singapore
Produced by Nestle, this Greek yogurt tastes undoubtedly great. It is rich, creamy and delightful. There are some strawberry chunks and jam inside that complement the yogurt very well.

Item: O' Good Morning Breakfast - $2
Location: Old Chang Kee (Novena Square, Singapore)
One morning, I saw Old Chang Kee at Novena Square selling nasi lemak, so I decided to grab one box for breakfast at school. Apparently, not all OCK outlets have this item. It came with chopped pieces of chicken, a thin slice of egg, ikan bilis and packed sambal. At only $2, it is super cheap and value for money. The serving was sufficient to keep me hungry-free until lunch time.

Item: Mix Toji Set - $10.90
Location: Yayoiken (313@Somerset, Singapore)
This mixed toji set is great for those who like to eat a variety of meats in one meal. It has sliced beef, fried prawn and tonkatsu simmered in egg and cooked to perfection on a hot plate.

Item: Ban Mian
Location: Cantine (Paya Lebar Square, Singapore)
I wanted a light meal for dinner, so I tried this ban mian stall which got no queue. The noodles were good in texture. The dish was completed with the usual raw egg, a handful of minced meat, veggies and ikan bilis. The soup base was quite tasty too.

Item: Nasi Lemak - $6.20
Location: 24Hr Food Gallery (Changi Airport Terminal 1, Singapore)
In one plate, there were fried chicken wings, a slice of thin omelette, ikan bilis, ground peanut and of course sambal belachan. The rice was quite fragrant and tasty, but sadly the chicken was not served warm. It was more like a last night's leftover chicken. Also, for such price, I felt it was pricey.

Item: Pangsit Mie Ayam - IDR18,000
Location: Depot Mie Tjwan Fey (Jl. Simpang Dukuh, Surabaya)
This noodle place is not a new thing for my family, because we have been their loyal customers even before I was born haha. It is actually a home business, so the restaurant occupies a part of the owner's house. Despite the relatively small space, they never run out of visitors. The noodle itself is a typical Chinese noodle, but don't worry, it is halal. The noodle was chewy, the chicken meat was seasoned well and topped with a heap of fried shallots. The beef meatballs were meaty, tender and juicy. What I love the most is their wontons, which contain generous amount of chicken inside. Overall, if you love Chinese-style noodle and don't mind eating in a humble, non-aircon place, this place deserves a visit.

Item: Nasi + Bebek Goreng - IDR25,000
Location: Bebek Sinjay (Jl. HR Muhammad, Surabaya)
The fried duck was served on a big plate of plain rice, topped with kremesan and the signature sambal pencit (young mango sambal). The duck was marinated in a blend of spices and fried to golden brown. The skin was crispy and flavourful. The duck meat was tender and could easily be torn apart from its bone.

Item: Thai Tea - IDR7,000
Location: Chang Tea (Pakuwon Trade Centre, Surabaya)
I think the Thai tea was rather diluted, but for the price I could not really complain

Item: Churros with Special Filling
Location: Indo Churros (Pakuwon Trade Centre, Surabaya)
Actually the churros comes with 5 fillings: Nutella, caramel, green tea, cappuccino and durian. You know, I hate durian so I asked the staff to change it with Nutella haha. They gave 6 pieces of thick churros. Somehow it tasted too floury for me, the filling was too little also. You see the filling oozing out from the churros on the pic above, you bite the oozing part and probably you will not be able to taste the filling anymore. That's how little it was!

Item: Waffle with Ice Cream - IDR 25,000
Location: A&W (Supermall Pakuwon Indah, Surabaya)
Who could resist fluffy waffle with vanilla soft-serve ice cream and chocolate sauce? It costs merely IDR25,000 and you can share a full round of waffle among two people.

Item: Paket Gratis 1 - IDR29,000
Location: A&W (Supermall Pakuwon Indah, Surabaya)
Paket Gratis (Free Package) basically means 'free rice' haha chey. I was surprised to see the chicken drumstick. It was sooo tiny (picture does speak a thousand words). The rice was the worst. It was soggy and had a strange smell, which went towards stale level. A&W standard has dropped, really.

Item: Beef Sausage - IDR12,000
Location: Genoise Corndogs (Galaxy Mall, Surabaya)
I had only one stick of corn dog. It is drizzled with mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup and chili sauce. On the first bite, it was piping hot! The batter was thick, but thankfully the sausage was too. The mixture of 4 kinds of sauce exploded in my mouth while I was chewing the corn dog.

Item: Bubur Ayam Phitan - IDR20,500 (large size)
Location: Ta Wan (Galaxy Mall, Surabaya)
It was simple yet delicious dish. Wish they were more generous with the chicken meat.
