White House, Surabaya
My friend and I happened to eat at White House on the Halloween's night. White House is basically a Dutch style house turned into cafe. To my surprise, the place was crowded but we managed to get seats near the door leading to the outdoor area. I would have loved the vibe if it was less crowded; the indoor space was bright with no over-the-top decoration as the colonial house itself was already charming.
The large number of customers was actually understandable though, I thought they must have made prior reservations for the Halloween event. Moreover, the small size of the cafe also caused the limited seats, which also made the place look full (more seats are available outdoor btw).
Choco Banana Smoothies - IDR49,000
The smoothie was topped with whipped cream and dusted with cocoa powder. The sweetness and texture were just right. Besides, both chocolate and banana tastes also equally stood out.
Guinness Float - IDR49,000
This Guinness beer-based drink was bearable for those who could hold their alcohol, as I barely felt anything almost until the last sip. It was easy to drink and tasted more like creamy milkshake.
Crispy Fish Rice Bowl - IDR79,000 barbeque
The dish had rice (duh), crispy dory fillets, fried egg and sliced ginger accompanied with a sauce of your choice (my friend chose barbeque sauce). The fish was tender but the overall dish lacked flavor without the presence of the sauce.
Pesto Pasta with Grilled Chicken - IDR88,000
The pasta was ordinary and the pesto flavor was not as garlicky or nutty as I hoped it would be. The grassy basil fragrance was also missing when it was supposed to be there. It is also a dish you only get it plain unless you pay more, so I topped up IDR19,000 for the grilled chicken (the initial price of the dish is IDR69,000). The grilled chicken was also lackluster as it was too dry.
Overall, White House is a pretty decent cafe, although the price is not very affordable. It is also a good place to take pictures and drink (given the large variety of booze), but if you really want food of great quality, it is best to look elsewhere. Besides, I think the food is also overpriced considering the taste and quality.
