Kotask Kaffe Co., Malang

The cafe scene in Malang is getting more exciting with many established cafes in town, including the newly-opened Nordic-style cafe named Kotask. Situated on the main road, this cafe's striking white color makes it super easy to find.

Kotask's interior mainly incorporates simplicity, minimalism and functionality, which includes usage of glass and light wood fixtures. The signage is written in Swedish word, even. The white-washed space gives off warm and homely vibes, and you will find daylight pouring in through the windows which is just perfect for all those photo-takings. I especially love their uncrowded layout, making it an ideal place to peacefully while away the morning without feeling disturbed by the constant guest flow.

Ice Mocha - IDR29,000
The coffee had mild acidity and a pleasant finish, though the chocolate flavor did not stand out much.

Truffle Fries - IDR35,000
As usual, truffle fries is an easy-to-love stuff and you cannot really go wrong with it. My only gripe was that it could do better with more touch of truffle.

Swedish Meatball - IDR58,000
When we think of Swedish food in Indo, seems that the only place that comes in mind is IKEA. Its meatball is such a legend that you would make a trip down to IKEA solely to eat it instead of buying furniture haha. Unfortunately IKEA is out of reach, but now you can satisfy your Swedish meatball craving in Kotask. This dish is a rare find especially in Malang's saturated cafe options. It came on a plate with a side of mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. The serving was surprisingly hearty, the meatballs were delicious and overall it was certainly not something you can find at just any cafe in Malang. The potatoes were just the right texture and were not too mushy.

Choco Peanut Waffle - IDR10,000
It tasted similar to Ferrero Rocher without the hazelnut crunch, not as dense as I thought it would be, good as a light snack. Would have been perfect if the waffle have a bit a more of moistness inside since I found it felt a little dry in general.

Overall, I liked Kotask's vibe and clean aesthetics. If you are looking for a coffee pick-me-up or a cycling pit-stop, Kotask is definitely the right place to be. Prices are on the higher side for Malang standard, but it is all worth the money spent especially if you are craving for Swedish meatballs. Despite the Scandinavian theme, the menu does not really venture far beyond pastas, Western grills and a few local cuisines that do not fully reflect the Nordic style — therefore I hope that there will be a stronger Nordic touch in their future menu.
