VCR, Kuala Lumpur

Hello readers! Recently I went to Kuala Lumpur for a short weekend getaway, and for sure I had to include cafe-hopping in my itinerary. It was a tough decision to choose which cafe to visit during this super short trip, so after doing a research and screening of reviews online, one of my picks went to VCR cafe. VCR is located on Jalan Galloway, a small road off Jalan Pudu. It is still in the Bukit Bintang area (the heart of KL) but the exact location is a bit odd so I just took Grab there haha. When I entered the cafe, the delicate aroma of coffee permeated. I knew I was going to spend a wonderful 2 hours here.

From the outside, it might just look like a normal black-colored building, but there are plenty of seats inside (the real deal is, this place is always crowded). You can choose to sit on the ground floor, long table upstairs, or benches in the balcony area. The ambiance is welcoming with mostly wood elements and warm lighting. Orders are to be done over the counter - they will give you a table number afterwards and just wait for your food/drink to be served to you.

Latte - RM12
As people were raving about their coffee, I should definitely not miss it. Coming in a big 9oz cup, the latte was made with double ristretto with steamed milk. It contained just enough caffeine to keep me awake, at least until late afternoon. The milk was mildly textured and the drink was in good temperature. Yes, VCR indeed serves one of the best coffees in KL!

Iced Valrhona Chocolate - RM13
The best thing to do to escape the heat is to have a glass of cold drink. Made with premium Valrhona chocolate, VCR’s version was laden with rich and thick chocolate flavour and thank goodness it was not cloyingly sweet.

Turkish Style Eggs - RM25
We felt somewhat adventurous and ordered the Turkish Style Eggs, which consisted of 63 degree eggs, Chipolata sausage and chickpeas on a hot pan. The dish was topped with Greek yoghurt, crushed pistachio and flaxseed. Two pieces of sourdough were also served on the side. The burst of savory and sour flavors created a confusion at first, but eventually it turned out pleasing to the tastebuds.

VCR Breakie - RM28
For something more substantial, go for the VCR Breakie that contains your choice of free-range egg atop sourdough toast, smoked English or Chipolata sausage, mushroom fricasse, lamb Bolognese, mesclun and grilled tomato. It might look like typical English-style breakfast, but in fact every element here was well-executed. I was initially hesitant to try the lamb Bolognese since I did not really eat lamb/mutton, but I actually enjoyed it to bits! The scrambled egg got a nice texture too, perfect to pair with the crunchy toast.

Overall, we had a splendid time at VCR. The brunch items were all satisfying - the quality and quantity were worthy of the price paid. VCR is so far my best find in KL and I would highly recommend it even if you are simply looking for a cup of coffee. The price may be tad steep but rest assure you will get the best of quality they can possibly offer.
