Völks Coffee, Surabaya

Völks Coffee is considered as a newcomer in coffee shop business in Surabaya — if I'm not mistaken, it has just been opened in February or March this year. Völks is situated on Jl. MH Thamrin (no it is not in Jakarta), sharing the same line with Miracle Aesthetic Clinic and opposite Karitas school. It is centrally and strategically located since it can be accessed easily from all parts of the city. Völks is actually a residential house modified into a coffee shop, no wonder the atmosphere feels so homey.

There are both indoor and outdoor areas here. The outdoor area looks rather plain with pebbles scattered on the ground - perhaps they could add more plants or something to make it more appealing.

The menu is pretty straightforward - there are selections of coffee, juice, and for the food there are some light snacks, main course, desserts and pastries displayed at the counter.

Red Velvet Latte - IDR35,000
The drink looks pretty in its red-pinkish color. There was a subtle chocolate tone, but the red velvet flavor could be bolder. If you are not in the mood for caffeine kick, this would be the right option for you.

Mocha - IDR35,000
For me, the mocha tasted rather weird, there seemed to be an imbalance between espresso and chocolate. I would like to have more chocolate on my mocha, please.

Egg Ben Telur Asin - IDR45,000
When I came across the word 'salted egg', I instantly knew what to order. It is such a unique, innovative creation, I must say. I like the idea of having salted egg sauce to substitute the usual hollandaise sauce on eggs benedict. Unexpectedly, the salted egg sauce tasted spicy! No wonder I found some chopped chilis inside. The bacon came in merely 2 small pieces, I thought it is more appropriate to call it garnish haha. Plus, it was not crispy at all - it was sadly dry and tough. No complain for the poached eggs and toast, but for me it is weird to eat eggs ben with lettuce - I would prefer to have sauteed spinach hehe.

Choco Bomb Choux - IDR25,000
I was appealed to get this dessert thanks to its cute appearance. It comes with chocolate injection as the filling (everything with injection always looks attractive to try, no?). The 'bomb' is made of puff pastry (something like Beard Papa's puff) glazed with chocolate and topped with Oreo crumbs and choco caviars. When I sliced it, it was frozen and stone-like. We then let it 'defroze' for a while until it could be sliced. It eventually became a satisfying treat haha.

Overall, Völks Coffee deserves a thumb up from me - the food is decent and the price still makes sense for youngters' pocket. Supported with quick wi-fi and cozy ambiance, Völks guarantees to make its patrons wanna spend hours there. One downside is probably the small parking lot, whereby your car might block another car (no choice lor), so the parking man will go into the cafe and ask you to move your car to give way to the blocked one. Oh ya, just a few more suggestions, the menu could be more varied and the side yard could be decorated with more plants, perhaps, so that it would not look very plain. Nonetheless, good job and all the best to Völks Coffee!
