Random Eats: April - June 2014

Item: Chocolate Oreo Puff - $1.70
Location: Chewy Junior (AMK Hub, Singapore)
Chewy Junior is a Singaporean brand selling soft, chewy pastry with various topping and cream filling. One of my favorite Chewy Junior variant is this Chocolate Oreo. It is best served cold instead of warm. The puff is chocolate-dipped and coated with Oreo crumbs. The chocolate filling was light and creamy and the Oreo crumb outside was just perfect. Every element complemented each other very well, resulting in tasty cream puff that was not overly sweet.

Item: Chocoreo - $1.50
Location: Wonder Buns (AMK Hub, Singapore)
The bun was fluffy and soft, and the amount of Oreo given was quite generous. However, for $1.50, I felt it was too pricey for such small size. Also, they should spread more vanilla cream, since some part of Oreo crumbs did not stick to the bun.

Item: Chicken Teriyaki Set - $4.80
Location: Foodfare (AMK Hub, Singapore)
It was pretty yummy. The chicken meat was generous and well-seasoned.

Item: Oyakodon - $5
Location: Foodfare (AMK Hub, Singapore)
I like the oyakodon here. It featured succulent chicken meat topped with egg and garnished with a splash of sweet sauce.

Item: Vanilla Oreo - $3.90
Location: Just Like It! (AMK Hub, Singapore)
Seems like liquid nitrogen ice cream has been a hit these days. Just Like It! is one of those stalls that sell this type of ice cream. The staffs are dressed in scientist attire, just as if they were working in a chemical lab. The ice cream here is made upon order, so you can assure its quality and freshness. They put all the fresh ingredients into the mixer, then mixed it with the liquid nitrogen and ta-dah, my ice cream was ready to enjoy. Anyway, what can go wrong with Oreo? It was a perfect mix between vanilla and Oreo in a cup. The ice cream itself was smooth and not overly sweet. For the price of almost 4 bucks, I think it is very worth it. You pay for the experience of watching the making process of the ice cream, and you also can enjoy the goodness of freshly-made ice cream.

Item: Teh Caramel Jelly Cold - $3
Location: Coffee Kaki (AMK Hub, Singapore)
I really like the caramel jelly inside, although it tasted more like grass jelly as I barely detected caramel flavor. The iced tea itself was just normal milk tea.

Item: Mee Siam - $3.90
Location: Coffee Kaki (AMK Hub, Singapore)
It was my first time trying this local dish. For those who are not familiar, mee siam is a dish made from rice vermicelli, beancurd, beansprouts, chives, and a hard-boiled egg in thick broth. The broth tasted a bit sour. Overall, this is not something I'm fond of haha.

Item: Cheese Ball - $1.80
Location: YummiBites (AMK Hub, Singapore)
There were 5 pieces of potato ball in a cup, drizzled with cheese sauce (the auntie asked me first whether I wanted the sauce or not). I love this snack as it tasted very cheesy. The cheese ball was quite big and the potato inside was soft. However, my friend and I had a bad experience eating this snack. When we bought it, it was still in hot condition. Knowing it was hot, we had blown it several times before it entered our mouths. And it was still freakin' HOT! The filling piped out and burnt every part of our mouths. I could not taste anything but hotness. Pity my friend, she had her gums swollen for a few days hereafter. She swore not to eat this cheese ball again lol. Despite the bad experience, I will still come back for this haha.

Item: You Tiao - $0.90
Location: Dough Culture (AMK Hub, Singapore)
The you tiao was crispy outside and fluffy inside. It was not overly salty or oily. It was still crispy when I packed home for around half an hour. It is great to eat it on its own or with porridge.

Item: Butterfly Bun - $0.90
Location: Dough Culture (AMK Hub, Singapore)
Butterfly bun is sweet fried dough covered with sesame seeds (we call it 'roti goreng' in Indonesia). There were a lot of sesame seeds and the bun was not oily despite being deep-fried. It is a good choice for evening snack with some hot tea or coffee to go along.

Item: Calamari Rings - $3.90
Location: Popeye's (Jubilee Square, Singapore)
The squid was not difficult too chew, the portion was quite generous as well. It remained crispy even after hours of storage. Although it was a bit tasteless, I still liked it because of the crispiness. The amount of calamari given was also quite generous. For $3.90, I think it is a good deal.

Item: Chicken Honey Drumlets (10 pcs)
Location: McDonald's (51@AMK, Singapore)
Their drumlets were served piping hot. They had crispy skin outside and tender flesh inside. There was also hint of lemon, but I almost could not taste the honey. The size was smaller though, compared to 4Fingers.

Item: McChicken Meal
Location: McDonald's (51@AMK, Singapore)
McChicken is like the non-spicy but less-crispy version of McSpicy. The chicken patty was juicy and savory, although this burger was not filling in general.

Item (left): Butterscotch Soft-Serve - $1
Item (right): Green Apple Soft-Serve - $1
Location: McDonald's (51@AMK, Singapore)
The overall taste of the butterscotch flavor was sweet. The butterscotch sauce tasted like normal caramel sauce. Since it is cheap, it does not really matter lol. Meanwhile, the green apple flavor was refreshing with a hint of sourness.

Item: Colonel's Fillet Burger - $2
Location: KFC (Novena Square, Singapore)
There was one time when I felt lost and did not know what to get at KFC, thus I had this burger. The burger has the Original Recipe chicken fillet in it, sandwiched between a toasted sesame seed bun with lettuce and mayonnaise. For only 2 bucks, I had no complain.

Item: Popcorn Chicken Snackers - $4
Location: KFC (Novena Square, Singapore)
I like to get this Snackers box when I'm not too hungry and just want to have some bites. With the price of $4, I think it is cheap as it also includes a regular drink. The Snackers box came with generous amount of bite-sized chicken and fries.

Item: KFC Egg Tart - $1
Location: KFC (Novena Square, Singapore)
KFC's egg tart is actually pretty good and value for money, despite being less known than other menus. The egg was just perfectly made. There was not too much custard or crust that made me feel sick of it. The custard was smooth, eggy, and the crust was flaky. The egg tart is originally retailed at $1.30, but if you purchase the value meal, you can buy the egg tart for just $1. Cheap right?

Item: Matcha Tea Latte with Pearls (regular size) - $3.50
Location: Chatime (Novena Square, Singapore)
It was not overly sweet and I could still savor the distinct matcha notes. Suitable if you are looking for milky yet strong matcha drink.

Item: Scrambled Ham - $1.70
Location: Mama Patisserie (Square 2, Singapore)
This bread was filling and the scrambled egg filling was soft with a peppery touch.

Item: Beef Vegetable Value Meal - $7.90
Location: Yoshinoya (Junction 8, Singapore)
Looks like Yoshinoya in Singapore does not have varied menu like in Indonesia. This value meal consists of beef bowl (signature sliced beef, cabbage, long beans, and carrots over white rice), and any choice of drinks. Yoshinoya's beef never fails to impress me. It was so juicy, flavorful, and tender. The veggie was rather tasteless though.

Item: Ebi Fry - $5.95
Location: Yoshinoya (Junction 8, Singapore)
The student meal set in Yoshinoya comes with a glass of soft drink. For the rice bowl, I chose Ebi Fry. It consists of 3 pieces fried ebi, vegetables, and of course rice. The ebi was crunchy and well-seasoned. No complain for rice, veggies and drink. Everything was enjoyable.

Item: Milk Tea with Pearls (regular size)
Location: BlackBall (Bugis+, Singapore)
Unfortunately, BlackBall's milk tea is not as good as their dessert. It is drinkable, but passable. I would say Chatime, Gong Cha and Koi do better than BlackBall in terms of bubble tea.

Item: Customized Dessert - $4.60
Location: BlackBall (Bugis+, Singapore)
We chose cold grass jelly base and added pearls, aiyu jelly and matcha balls as toppings. Creamer was also provided for those who want to make the dessert creamier. It was refreshing and the portion was enough for 2. The toppings were given generously, except for the matcha balls haha (I could only find 3 balls!).

Item: Kaya Swiss Roll - $7.50
Location: Rich & Good Cake Shop (Kandahar Street, Singapore)
I like Rich & Good's kaya Swiss roll so much, especially when it is served chilled. The cold layer of kaya rolled up between the cake had a strong and delicate fragrance. I could taste the richness of the kaya in every bite. The cake itself was soft and moist. The roll is sold uncut and wrapped with plastic before being packed in a long box. One whole roll can be equally divided into 10-15 pieces.

Item: Macho Cheese Fries - $4.90 (small size)
Location: Best Fries Forever (Cineleisure Orchard, Singapore)
The fries was thick-cut type one, fried until crispy. It was served hot as it was fried upon order. The cheese sauce drenched over the fries was oozy, thick and yummy. Price wise, it is a tad steep but overall it is still worth trying. I will definitely come back for other variants.

Item: Original Cup A (4oz) - $3.70
Location: Frolick (Cineleisure Orchard, Singapore)
I decided to play safe by ordering original flavor instead of those fruity ones. I did not like having plain froyo without any topping, so I chose fruity pebbles topping to complement my froyo (additional topping cost $1). It was nice, sour and soft froyo blended well with crunchy fruity pebbles. Nomnom!

Item: Choco Chip Cream Frappuccino - $6.50 (tall size)
Location: Starbucks (ION Orchard, Singapore)
This is my favorite frappe to get when I want something non-coffee. It had bold chocolate flavor that was sweet enough for my liking.

Item: Molten Chocolate Cake - $6
Location: Starbucks (VivoCity, Singapore)
It is chocolate cake with molten chocolate at the center of the cake. The chocolate was gooey and very rich. Although the size was not very big, I really enjoyed my cake because it was such a sinful treat.

Item: Strawberry Kiss - $6.50 (regular size)
Location: Smoothie King (Nex, Singapore)
From Slim & Lite selection (<200 calories smoothie), I had this Strawberry Kiss, which was California strawberries blended with vanilla protein. The smoothie smoothie was creamy and velvety enough for my liking. The amount of sugar was just nice to balance the slight acidity of the strawberries. Such a good yet healthy way to beat the afternoon heat.

Item: Bale' Shake Bubble Milk Tea
Origin: Thailand
Bale' Shake is originated from Thailand, but its milk tea tastes very Taiwanese. You can substitute your daily dose of Gong Cha or KOI with this. It is creamy and rich with fragrant tea leaves and subtle caramel taste.

Item: Chocobi - $2
Origin: Japan
Finally I got to try Shinchan's favorite snack. This chocolate chocobi tastes like cocoa puffs, great to eat on its own or with cold milk. Every box comes with a surprise - mine was Shinchan sticker haha.

Item: Nasi Soto Ayam Kampung - IDR13,000
Location: Soto Kesambi Pak Wianto (Jl. Gladagan, Salatiga)
This is my family's favorite place to eat soto in Salatiga. Like typical Central Java-style soto, it also comes in small bowl with rice, shredded chicken, beansprouts and fried shallots. Don't forget to add extra side dishes like fried tempe, perkedel or quail egg satay to accompany your soto.

Item: Siomay Ayam Jamur - IDR10,000
Location: LiV Kedai Makan (Jl. Aliwijayan, Salatiga)
The chicken and mushroom siomay was not bad, but I tasted better one at other places.

Item: J-Cone
Location: Museum Angkut, Batu
The cone was tough and the ice cream was just so so. The only thing I like from this treat is just its cute appearance.

Item: Silky Pudding
Location: Moru Milk (Galaxy Mall, Surabaya)
Moru Milk is known for its silky pudding. I brought taro, bubble gum and Thai tea flavors. The taste of taro and Thai tea was distinct, unfortunately the bubble gum one was bland. The texture itself is jiggly and very soft, you can even suck it with a straw.

Item: Red Velvet White Chocolate Cake - IDR25,000
Location: Starbucks (Tunjungan Plaza 4, Surabaya)
Tried this out of curiosity, but it turned out disappointing. The cake was on the soggy side. I could not taste any hint of red velvet either, and the buttercream was just blah.
