Random Eats: April - June 2022

Item (left): Roast Chicken 6” with Honey Oat Bread - IDR37,500
Item (right): Italian BMT 6” with Parmesan Bread - IDR45,000
Location: Subway (Setiabudi One, Jakarta)
Wellllll, I like to psycho myself that Subway is a healthier choice — I mean, just look at the fresh, crunchy veggie there haha. Containing salami, pepperoni and ham, every bite was simply exploding with umami goodness and Italian BMT is no doubt the meatiest sub they had. As for the Roast Chicken sub, the meat was a bit dry but it was not too oily either, so you would not be breaking your diet on this one.

Item (left): Baileys - IDR35,000
Item (right): Qleponan - IDR30,000
Location: Circle Q Coffee & Eatery (Jl. Raya Pandanrejo, Batu)
Both drinks were so so to me. They all tasted generic but the serving was worth the price.

Item: Snack Platter - IDR25,000
Location: Circle Q Coffee & Eatery (Jl. Raya Pandanrejo, Batu)
Mediocre snack platter filled with frozen food.

Item: Ice Dark Choco - IDR22,000
Location: Kefi Coffee & Eatery (Jl. Kavling DPR 4, Sidoarjo)
The drink was chocolaty enough, it had the sweet flavor with a tad of bitterly taste.

Item: Lychee Yakult - IDR26,000
Location: Kefi Coffee & Eatery (Jl. Kavling DPR 4, Sidoarjo)
It was actually a customized menu since they only had Peach Yakult in the menu but at the same time they also had lychee syrup, so I requested them to make the lychee version. It was appetizing, refreshing, and not too sour.

Item: Butter Rice Dori Sambal Matah - IDR35,000
Location: Kefi Coffee & Eatery (Jl. Kavling DPR 4, Sidoarjo)
The butter rice was soft but could be a little more fragrant. An okay dish overall.

Item: Flat White - IDR35,000
Location: Caturra Espresso (Jl. Anjasmoro, Surabaya)
As expected from Caturra, the coffee was great and enjoyable. Also, kudos to the barista for making an appropriate flat white (in most cafes, it always resembles latte). The coffee itself was quite strong in flavor, but smooth without any sourish aftertaste, although the pattern was very common.

Item: Dihyan - IDR35,000
Location: Caturra Espresso (Jl. Anjasmoro, Surabaya)
Bought this because I thought the packing looked attractive. It was milk coffee with a hint of Jasmine tea, so unique right? The taste itself was not disappointing either.

Item: Salted Egg Chicken on Aromatic Rice - IDR55,000
Location: Caturra Espresso (Jl. Anjasmoro, Surabaya)
The salted egg here was the dry type one, but it was delicious. The chicken was also crispy, tender, and easy to chew with little effort used.

Item: Balinese Matah Pork Rice - IDR57,000
Location: Caturra Espresso (Jl. Anjasmoro, Surabaya)
Look at how the serving of the sambal was bigger than the meat lol. Although the pork was slightly greasy, it was perfect to pair with the sambal matah which had nuanced taste of shallot and lemongrass.

Item: Blossom Hotcakes - IDR47,000
Location: Le Cafe Gourmand (Jl. Pregolan, Surabaya)
I am a fan of pancake but this dessert somehow did not satisfy. Something was oozing out when I cut the pancake, not sure if it was custard or uncooked batter. The ice cream, on the other hand, was nice as expected from LCG. At least it saved the dish from utter disaster.

Item: Sirloin Steak - IDR99,000
Location: Bon Ami (Jl. Kombes Pol. M. Duryat, Surabaya)
Lean yet tender sirloin slices smothered in a tangy brown sauce. Make sure to mop up all that scrumptious sauce with the side of free-flow shoestring fries. The fries were adequately crispy but the veggies were rather dry.

Item: Es Puter Coklat + Kelapa Muda
Location: Es Puter Intisari Pak Bambang (Jl. Kombes Pol. M. Duryat, Surabaya)
This is my family's favorite es puter. I particularly loved the chocolate one, which was laden with rich chocolate flavor.

Item: Japanese Style Wagyu Skirt (500gr) - IDR173,000
Location: My Story Steak & Eatery (Jl. Pregolan, Surabaya)
Asked for medium-rare doneness and it came with slightly pinkish centre. The beef was oh sooo juicy — there were more fatty parts than expected, but the fat was well rendered and smooth to cut through. The sauces that accompanied also gave the meat different layers of flavor and it went so well with the sides. Definitely worth every Rupiah!

Item: Kunafa - IDR49,000
Location: Emado's Shawarma (Jl. Embong Malang, Surabaya)
Love love it! This Palestinian-style pastry was crispy and the mozza inside was super stretchy! You are actually supposed to eat this with the provided sugar syrup so you get a mixture of cheesiness and sweetness, but I prefer to eat the pastry on its own haha.

Item: Es Kopi Susu Blangkon - IDR22,500
Location: Bagi Kopi Signature (Jl. Margorejo Indah, Surabaya)
The palm sugar syrup was too sweet for my liking.

Item: Rainbow Fiesta - IDR45,000
Location: Mad Bagel (Jl. Untung Suropati, Surabaya)
Jakarta's best bagel shop is finally here in Surabaya! If you have not heard of Mad Bagel, this place sells NYC-style bagels that are baked daily. The conveniently-halved rainbow bagel was dense, chewy, and accompanied with strawberry cream cheese and sliced strawberries for a sour-cheesy finish.

Item: Pepperoni Pizza - IDR30,000
Location: Pizza Place (Jl. Untung Suropati, Surabaya)
My first impression was 'wow, the pizza is pretty big'. I love the homemade pizza dough as it was super moist, while the smoky flavor of the pepperoni worked well on the pizza. It was a simple and classic pizza that never gets old.

Item: Soft Ice Cream - IDR8,000
Location: Mixue (G-Walk, Surabaya)
For only IDR8,000, this is definitely the most value-for-money soft-serve I have eaten so far. And just look at the generous quantity, this beats IKEA's hands down! If you like ice cream with distinct milk flavor, you will love this one.

Item: Boba Sundae - IDR16,000
Location: Mixue (G-Walk, Surabaya)
I personally felt the soft-serve was already sweet on its own, but thankfully the boba could neutralize everything. On a side note, you have to eat it fast because the soft-serve turns into liquid quickly. But then you can get a cup of chilled milk tea haha!

Item: Baileys Coffee (330ml) - IDR32,000
Location: Saisho (G-Walk, Surabaya)
Nothing more satisfying than a can of smooth coffee with an evident hint of creaminess from the Baileys.

Item (front): Es Kopi Susu Aren - IDR20,000
Item (back): Es Kopi Susu Coklat - IDR25,000
Location: Kopi Anak Monopole (Loop, Surabaya)
As expected from Monopole, both coffees were well-executed.

Item: Marvelous Meatball - IDR90,000
Location: Redback Specialty Coffee (Graha Golf, Surabaya)
Sounds pricey, but it was actually worth sharing! The huge beef balls were served in onion-based gravy, completed with mashed potato and carrots. I expected the dish to taste like Swedish meatballs, but this was heavier and sweeter.

Item: Beef Jumbo Mozza - IDR52,000
Location: MangGang Grilled Beef Bowl (Pakuwon Trade Centre, Surabaya)
Using 100% US beef, it surely gives the satisfaction and luxury taste you normally find on upscale BBQ places. I love how the beef was so tender and not very thick, so it took on the full smokey BBQ aroma and savory marinade (see how generous the beef is?). To shake things up, a heap of gooey mozza cheese is added atop the beef slices. Be sure to eat them with the sambal petir, which provides extra kick that will tickle your tastebuds even more.

Item: Cheese Long Fries - IDR31,000
Location: Montato (Pakuwon Mall, Surabaya)
Handmade long French fries, and it is really what you see in the picture. Fries were typically crispy and quite starchy. They were generous with the cheese seasoning but other than that, taste wise it was not super fantastic — bought it for the novelty only.

Item: Crispy Roasted Pork Rice - IDR65,000
Location: Nam Heong (Pakuwon City Mall, Surabaya)
The roasted pork came with crisp skin and lean meat, decent though there was nothing much to shout about. Rice was fragrant, flavorful and slightly glossy, akin to that of the Singaporean or Malaysian chicken rice. Overall, it is still a fairly good option considering there are not many places selling similar dish around the area.

Item: 3pcs Croffle - IDR29,000
Location: Dear Butter (Tunjungan Plaza 1, Surabaya)
I personally think Dear Butter is quite overrated. It was not as buttery as claimed and the texture was not the softest.

Item: Beef Pepper Rice - IDR66,364
Location: Pepper Lunch (Tunjungan Plaza 3, Surabaya)
Why do I always feel that Pepper Lunch is expensive here in Indo?! Lol. Anyway, I can never say no to its Beef Pepper Rice, where I can enjoy mixing the peppered rice, corn and beef slices for a warm and comforting meal.

Item (top): Chicken Thigh with Green Pepper
Item (bottom): Chicken Skin Tare - IDR12,727
Location: Tori-Yo (Tunjungan Plaza 3, Surabaya)
The closest one to ma favorite Tori Q! The chicken meat was tender, melt-in-the-mouth, and had a nice char taste. Meanwhile, the skin had an addictive puffy texture, which went great with the sweet tare sauce. Next time I would definitely get the one with rice hehe.

Item: Chicken Teriyaki - IDR50,000
Location: Sushi Go! (Tunjungan Plaza 3, Surabaya)
The teriyaki seasoning tasted sweet and umami. The meat was cooked to perfection and it was very tender too.

Item: Matcha Frost - IDR45,000
Location: Bakerzin (Tunjungan Plaza 4, Surabaya)
The drink was overly sweet, with hardly any matcha flavor. Perhaps the amount of whipped cream should be reduced so we could taste more of the matcha.

Item: Ispahan Macaron - IDR13,000
Location: Bakerzin (Tunjungan Plaza 4, Surabaya)
The raspberry flavor in was quite overwhelming and covered up the milkiness of the macaron.

Item: Blueberry Cheese Croffle - IDR68,000
Location: Toby's Estate (Tunjungan Plaza 5, Surabaya)
Sorry to say but Toby's croffles are overpriced. It did not do well in the texture department either. The croffle was hard to cut and bite, moreover it was not served to us in hot condition.

Item: Grilled Chicken Ramen - IDR69,000
Location: Sushi Tei (Tunjungan Plaza 5, Surabaya)
The warm, umami broth with pieces of grilled chicken made for a satisfying and filling meal. This is one dish that I always go back for.

Item: Oyaku Ju - IDR52,000
Location: Sushi Tei (Tunjungan Plaza 5, Surabaya)
It arrived piping hot and despite the small-looking serving, the dish was actually fulfilling. The chicken pieces were tender but slightly salty.
