Ippudo, Jakarta
Ippudo is one of Japan's top ramen shops that many people are raving about. I remember seeing a long queue in front of its Mandarin Gallery outlet in Singapore back then, and even until my visit to its Central Park Jakarta branch, there was still waiting list during lunchtime. The founder of Ippudo, Shigemi Kawahara, is known as the Ramen King after winning three consecutive nationwide ramen-making competition where top ramen chefs compete to create the best ramen. So, does Ippudo really live up to its hype?
Ocha Cold - IDR19,000
Good news, the ocha is refillable here.
Shiromaru Regular - IDR70,000
You know it is an authentic Japanese ramen shop when you get to custom the hardness of the noodle. I opted for 'hard', which gave a good bite and springiness. This Shiromaru ramen is ideal for those who want to taste the truly original flavor of Hakata-style ramen, which also justifies that sometimes less is more. It is basically rosu (pork loin) chashu, noodles, black fungus and spring onions bathed in original tonkotsu broth. The broth was addictive - it was rich, aromatic yet not greasy. It came with a gorgeous piece of rosu chashu (pork loin). It is one of those moments in life where you can find comfort in a simple thing that is inexplicable.
Karaka Regular - IDR86,000
On the other hand, the Karaka ramen had a spicy kick to it with an additional dollop of miso paste. The rest of the dish is just akin to Shiromaru ramen.
Ippudo has always been known as one of the best ramen shops in Japan, and perhaps this explains why people go there with high expectations (I am one of them lol). Luckily the one in Jakarta fulfilled my expectations. The menu is quite extensive, offering more than just ramen. While I have heard sayings that Ippudo's overseas outlets are overrated and not as good as the one in Japan, I think it all boils down to knowing how to manage your expectations :)
