Eatlah, Surabaya
Instead of being just a fad, salted egg chicken has somehow become one of the comfort foods to enjoy on a regular basis. Who have ever thought that such dish with simple components could turn into something addictive. Nowadays, it is super common to see most cafes and restaurants having salted egg chicken on their menu (sometimes it is paired with dory fish or pork).
Eatlah is a famous salted egg chicken joint that has gained popularity in its origin, Jakarta. Its first (and currently only) Surabaya outlet is located at Tunjungan Plaza 3, next to Sour Sally. The place might not be a very comfortable one to dine at - the space is rather crampy with only a few seats available. It is more suitable for on-the-go meal or takeaway.
Salted Egg Chicken - IDR50,000 (jumbo size)
While usually a cafe dish contains more rice than the meat, Eatlah's version is the opposite. Don’t dare to get the jumbo size for yourself, I warn you! The salted egg chicken is served on a bed of warm rice and sunny side up egg in a carton takeaway box, regardless of dine-in or takeaway. When I started digging in, I immediately felt comfort in the familiar flavors of chicken and creamy salted egg sauce. The chicken chunks were fried to a crisp texture. The salted egg sauce was strong with subtle spiciness. It was pretty close to Cui Xiang Yuan, my all-time favorite SEC in Singapore.
Eatlah may not be the most comfortable place to eat, but you can always get it through online food delivery app if you want to enjoy the comfort of SEC at home. Still, I could say it is one of the best SECs in town.
