Toby's Estate, Surabaya
Good news for my fellow coffee enthusiasts in Surabaya! Toby’s Estate, famous Australian coffee roasters, has opened its first Surabaya outlet in Tunjungan Plaza 5. Established in 2001 by Toby Smith in Sydney, the story started when he learned about coffee and its culture in coffee plantations in Brazil, Guatemala and Columbia. At Toby's, coffees are sourced from various exotic places around the world like Indonesia, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and many more, allowing you to explore amazing tastes of coffee from different origins through different brewing methods.
I have been to Toby's Estate Singapore 4 years ago, and I must say the one here in Surabaya looks completely different. Its Surabaya outlet looks more high-end with dominant grey color and hanging overhead lamps, whereby Singapore outlet has more hipster ambiance. I was not surprised to see many people patronizing this place since it was only one week past their grand opening.
Flat White - IDR35,000
Of course you cannot visit Toby's Estate without having their famous coffee. All espresso-based drinks here are made with double ristretto shot for more intensity. My flat white had a rather bright and acidic note upon the first sip. The acidity then faded out quickly to reveal fruity notes at the end. It was a well-balanced brew overall.

I somehow feel that their coffee is less strong when served cold. Nevertheless, the drink was smooth and refreshing to drink on a hot day like this.

Brooklyn Style Eggs Benedict - IDR68,000
I tried Toby's eggs benedict, which consisted of poached eggs, smoked beef bacon and Hollandaise on top of warm brioche. Toby's Hollandaise sauce is tangier than the usual Hollandaise. It was a good source of protein and the portion was truly satisfying for breakfast. The eggs were well-poached and blended perfectly with the bacon.

Fyi, it is one of the recommended menus at Toby's and I rarely find (good) French toast in Surabaya, so there is no reason not to try it here. Definitely no regret getting this - it was worthy of my calories. With warm butterscotch sauce, berries and a dollop of fresh cream sitting on fluffy brioche, Toby's rendition puts other run-of-the-mill versions to shame. The serving size is hearty enough as a main, but sharing is recommended as it could get too sweet after a while.

All in all, I'm so glad that my favorite Australian coffee shop is finally here to fix my caffeine deficiency. With its amazing coffees and impressive brunch menus, Toby's Estate brings out the authentic Melbourne cafe experience to Surabaya. The place is rather too noisy if you want to have a tranquil brunch time, but you will love its vibrant atmosphere that suits group gathering and quick catch-up with friends.
