Magal 마포갈매기, Surabaya
Are you searching for a good quality Korean BBQ place, the kind that has a wide variety of meat and nice ambiance? Magal can put an end to your search. Originated from South Korea with quite a large number of branch across the globe, this KBBQ restaurant prides itself on its galmaegi or tender pork cooked on a specialized grill surrounded by an egg crust. Contrary to many other similar restaurants, Magal offers a cozy space for any small or big group dining. Its Galaxy Mall outlet even has VIP rooms for those wanting for more intimate gathering.

We started our meal with banchan dishes such as pasta salad, baby potatoes and braised egg. The salad with black sesame dressing was the most interesting dish, with fresh vegetables and a sauce that was light on the palate. The kimchi tasted fresh, well-seasoned and complemented the other dishes very well. All sides were really good and appetizing.
Mapo Samgyupsal - IDR110,000
Since we were eating at a KBBQ restaurant, it would be a sin to not order the meat so we got a serving of their samgyupsal (pork belly). Another plus about Magal is that you do not need to cook your food at all because the staff does all the grilling or cooking for you. You will just be busy eating! Although I personally thought that the quantity did not quite match up to the price, the juiciness and quality of the tender-cut pork made up for it. It was also a little on the oily side, but having it with the fresh lettuce wraps and kimchi definitely brought a different edge. As it was marinated already, we could actually eat this without any sauce or salt.
Dwaeji Kimchi Jjigae - IDR75,800
Given the cold rainy weather recently, I decided to order something warm: dwaeji kimchi jjigae or kimchi stew with tofu and pork. It was a simple yet very comforting dish, and it also helped to fight off the oiliness from the grilled meat we were getting. The soup base was quite thick and there was a generous amount of ingredients inside. The sourness of the kimchi was also moderate, which I really enjoyed.
Ttukbaegi Bulgogi - IDR89,800
Similarly, this dish of glass noodles and beef bulgogi slices in broth was simple yet comforting. The soup was robust yet not too salty, while the tender beef slices went really well with a bowl of rice.
All in all, we enjoyed our meal at Magal as the food was of good taste and quality. It definitely lived up to its title of being Korea's no. 1 KBBQ restaurant. If you miss traveling to Korea and eating like the locals there, just go to Magal. Try to avoid the lunch or dinner time on weekends to make the most of your mealtime, or otherwise be prepared to face the long wait.
