[Re-branded] Gifu Japanese Restaurant, Surabaya

Gifu is a Japanese eatery that has recently opened its premise at Kertajaya Indah (the area behind Galaxy Mall 1). Now those living in the East Surabaya have a new option of affordable Japanese fare. The menu is straightforward, comprising of Japanese usual suspects such as sushi, donburi and ramen.

The space is not very spacious, but the use of wooden furniture creates bright and warm feels. There is also semi-outdoor seating that makes us feel like dining in a house terrace.

Ocha - IDR8,000

Not sure if it was refillable.

Matcha Coffee - IDR32,000

It was a cool refresher to help fight the relentless heat, with both coffee and matcha notes packing quite a punch.

We ordered this fried omelette as an add-on (forgot the price as it was off-the-menu). It was a simple yet tasty side dish that could hardly go wrong

Beef Teriyaki Don - IDR42,000

The dish boasted tender and robust-tasting beef slices that were easy to bite. Taste-wise, the teriyaki seasoning was slightly too sweet for my liking. 

Beef Katsu Curry - IDR56,000

The slabs of beef were coated with panko flour and fried to crispiness. When eaten without curry, the beef katsu could use a touch of seasoning to really bring out that medium well goodness. Be warned though, the curry sauce was unexpectedly spicy for my sensitive stomach, thus I would have preferred if it was less peppery.

I'm definitely all for new eateries popping up (especially in the east), and I would say Gifu is a pretty decent entry. And with Galaxy Mall just a hop and skip away, there is no excuse to not head over and give this charming eatery a try.
