[Closed] Sugar Lips, Singapore
What comes in your mind when hearing the words 'Sugar Lips'? Lips full of sugar? Haha. Sugar Lips is actually the name of an eatery in Orchard Central, and judging by the name it sounds like a dessert place. Yes, you are correct! You can expect to find your favorite rainbow cake, molten cake and waffles here. Its location in Orchard Central is somewhat secluded, but visible enough to passers-bys who happen to be in the vicinity. While the place looks colorful and captivating from outside, the inside interior looks interestingly strange to me (eh, but at the same time it looks Instagenic too). Sorry for not taking pictures of the interior, but I hope you can imagine pipes on the ceiling, concrete floor, partitioned seats that look like fortress wall (the partition actually creates privacy between seats), and grey wall with touches of paint splash everywhere. Still cannot imagine? Then just Google it haha.
Dessert is obviously the main selling point here, although some savory bites like chicken pie and lasagna are also available. If the idea of having a slice of cake served on a plate does not entice you, Sugar Lips has brought it to the next level by throwing various toppings onto the plate and 'messing it up' in an artsy way. All dessert platters come at a fixed cost of $16.90 for large size with 3 toppings. The small and medium sizes were all marked sold-out when I came, or did it simply mean we could order those sizes no more? The toppings were randomly chosen by the staff, boo... It was indeed disappointing as I was expecting to have my own creation by choosing which toppings to pair up with my dessert.
Lavalicious Matcha Molten - $16.90
The molten cake was served in the middle of the plate, accompanied with cookies, wafers, marshmallows and one choice of ice cream (my friend chose matcha ice cream). The molten cake was a tad dry but the matcha filling was delicious.
Rainbow Fantasy Cake - $16.90
Instagenic alert! This multi-colored cake was totally pleasing to my eyes and I could not wait to dig in. If you order rainbow cake, you will not be able to choose the ice cream flavor, but the cake will be served with rainbow ice cream (that looks like Walls Paddle Pop rainbow ice cream) by default, marshmallows and jam-filled cookies. The cake featured a soft, moist and fluffy texture. Some layers got different flavor and some tasted the same. I like how the vanilla cream was light in sweetness. The colorful syrup used to decorate the plate tasted weird though, I felt like putting in perfume into my mouth (have you even done that before Ariella?!).
Overall, I enjoyed my dessert time here at Sugar Lips, although I sort of did not understand the logic of not providing plain water when it is a necessity to wash down your throat after eating sweet stuffs (they only have non-alcoholic drinks by pitcher and mineral water). Nonetheless, the service was friendly - the staff clearly explained us the menu and told us about their ongoing promotion. I would gladly recommend you to bring your friends or your date to Sugar Lips for a sweet, sugar-loaded experience in a whimsical setting.
